The Business Data Scientist

Process Mining has gone from unknown technology to become a widely respected tool. However, implementation of this tooling is not always successful. In this way, trajectories remain in the technology; or processes do indeed become transparent, but people are not sure what to do with these new possibilities. The need for a link between strategy and insight is getting stronger by the day. The Business Data Scientist can help with this.

"The Business Data Scientist, the hero of process mining"

Process Mining is a technology that provides insight into business processes. By making use of the data that is already present in the system landscape, processes can be depicted in a strong yet simple way. This is possible for any process, any system, and at any time.

An implementation often leads to various dashboards, which are specifically made to the needs of the user. This shows lead times, bottlenecks and risks in an attractive and clear manner.

The well-known Process Mining applications are not standing still and are continuously expanding their functionality. For example, in a recent release of Celonis, one of the most widely used toolings, it has become possible to integrate Process Mining into your ERP system. This provides insights at the moment when operational decisions are actually made. In addition, Celonis has added the “Action Engine”, with which personal tasks are initiated from the Process Mining application. Think of application possibilities such as:

  • If the description of a purchased item is changed, the Master Data administrator is given a task to verify whether the master data needs to be changed.
  • If the KPI for the number of on-time deliveries falls below a certain minimum, the process owner is informed to investigate this further.

More and more companies are seeing the ever-increasing potential of Process Mining, but at the same time it sometimes becomes painfully clear that the "fit" between technical possibilities and actual application is becoming more distant. The Business Data Scientist is the link that can bring both worlds together.

A Business Data Scientist is the person who operates between the data and system specialists and the people who have to give direction to the process or the organization. These persons must have process knowledge, have a feeling for the business objectives, and be able to determine, together with the stakeholders, which information and insights are essential to steer a process and organization. Using these insights, knowledge and skills, the Business Data Scientist, together with the Data Engineers, will unlock, clean up and provide visualizations that add value to the company.

In addition, the Business Data Scientist fulfills a coordinating role in the implementation. For example, he ensures proper preparation and ensures that the workload is split into manageable chunks, so that short-cycle work can be done in order to be able to quickly show the first results. Through this methodology, insights will be obtained that can directly contribute to the business objectives, and Process Mining will gain in popularity, just like with many other companies.

Marcadus is involved in guiding changes in companies in the field of strategy, processes and systems. Process Mining is a technology that is often applied by us. The implementation includes the initiation, implementation and training of the organization to create optimal value for their (internal) customers. Marcadus distinguishes itself by focusing on the business context and by allowing companies to extract the maximum value from their own person. Would you like to know more about the possibilities in your company? Please contact us.
